In a continuing effort to keep Granite City Grocery in the forefront of Barre’s community, GCG had a table at this weekend’s Connecting Hope event at the Barre Aud.  Along with at least 15 other community-based organizations, GCG volunteers spoke with a diverse demographic group about what we hope to offer all members of our community through our store.  Many folks signed up to receive our newsletters and internet communications.  At least one person made their first payment to become a new GCG member-owner, while others took home info so they could do more research about GCG and/or make payments via the ‘net'.

And as is common while tabling, most had heard of us but not everyone!  Of the hundred or so who stopped to chat with Joan, Nick, Phil and me, all agree a downtown grocery store would be a major boost for Barre.  We all talked about the need for a place to purchase a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as larger quantities of everyday foods and staples, within walking distance of downtown. I was reminded that transportation is an issue for many of our neighbors…

Phil Cecchini, GCG member-owner who is running for a position on the GCG Board, was a new-to-tabling volunteer.  He did a great job, and it was wonderful to be able to get to know him a bit before GCG elections.  Nick Landry, also running for a spot on GCG’s Board, was present and is an old hand at tabling, making everyone he spoke with feel valued.  Joan Higgins, who lives in Northfield and has worked in Barre for years (lived here, too) is a delightful and informed GCG volunteer.  We have many wonderful people working to make GCG a reality.

So, as Nick Landry often reminds me: ‘Present – we need to remain ever-present’ within the community for Granite City Grocery to become a reality.  Think about how you can help us be ‘ever-present’…
